Adam Cole

Biography

Adam Cole deals with the complexities of intimacy and identity in the age of AI, crafting immersive experiences that explore desire in the shadow of artificial representation. He integrates advanced AI technologies, film, and installation within an expanded cinema practice to challenge the normative fantasies embedded in AI networks, seeking more diverse, poetic, and sensual alternatives.

Adam is a recipient of the AHRC Techné Studentship and is currently pursuing a PhD in experimental AI video art at the Creative Computing Institute. His research focuses on the potential of queer-expanded cinema to challenge and transcend heteronormative bias in AI video systems. His practice-based study will explore what techniques can disrupt the heteronormative fantasies embedded in AI video systems to generate more diverse, poetic, and sensual alternatives.

Adam's research has been published in academic journals including SIGGRAPH, Ars Electronica EXPANDED, ACM Creativity & Cognition (C&C), ACM TEI, and xCoAx. His video art has been exhibited internationally at galleries, film festivals, and academic conferences including the SXSW Film Festival, the Onassis Foundation, Sheffield DocFest Alternate Realities, Sonar+D Barcelona, and SIGGRAPH Arts. His most recent installation, Kiss/Crash, has been recognized by the Lumen Prize, the Aesthetica Art Prize, the Asia Digital Art Award, and won the XR Audience Award at SXSW 2024. Adam has been an artist in residence at the Espronceda Institue in Barcelona and Onassis ONX in Athens.
