Biography

John is Senior Lecturer in Practice as Research within UAL's Teaching, Learning and Employability Exchange. He was previously Course Tutor on MA Innovation Management at Central Saint Martins, running the Exploration and Experimentation unit. His teaching, research and client-focussed work focusses on helping others develop novel forms of knowledge production and insight through cultivating an understanding of their practice.

After a PhD in Philosophy at the University of Warwick, John has taught in universities including University of Greenwich, the RCA and the China Academy of Arts, on courses such as Cultural Studies, Psychoanalysis, Philosophy of Science Fiction, and the Uncertainty Project. He worked in journalism, communications and trend analysis being a regular contributor to The Guardian and The Independent on Art, Media Music, worked on Colors Magazine, and was editor of Varoom magazine from 2010-2019.

John has written essays and catalogues for artists such as Martin Creed, image makers such as Noma Bar and exhibitions such as Communicate: Independent British Graphic Design since the Sixties at the Barbican. Books include: Recharge Your Design Batteries (2009) with Tony Linkson; No Brief: Graphic Designers' Personal Projects (2002); Illusive 4, (2015), an overview of the latest directions in the made-image; A Creative Philosophy of Anticipation (2021) co-edited with Dr Jamie Brassett.
