About the winner of the Stylist of the Year Award

Nariman Janghorban

Tell us a bit about yourself and your creative journey so far:

During high school, I discovered that fashion really intrigued me and so I started looking for a University where I could learn more about it. I applied to CSM (Central Saint Martins) Fashion Foundation course on the advice of a family member and during that program, I put together a portfolio that helped me get into the BA. The Fashion Design and Marketing course taught me a lot about research and design processes and made me realize how much I like putting together the final images of looks, rather than designing the clothes.

Since graduating in 2009, the process of image-making has always interested me; even back in school, it was the part I enjoyed the most. I moved back to Canada and began styling. I started with small personal projects and built enough of a portfolio that led me to get jobs in commercials and editorial.

How did your time at UAL contribute to your work?

I have very fond memories of my time at UAL. The school’s atmosphere influenced me with its creativity: my classmates were some of the most stimulating and creative people I have ever met. Also, tutors played a central role in teaching me how important research and references are for the final result.

You won the 2022 Canadian Awards - congratulations! Tell us more about that...

Thank you so much! It was a big surprise to hear my name announced as the winner. It feels great to have my work recognised, and I feel motivated to do even more. There are many talented people in this country, who get rarely seen at an international level. I hope this Award will help to showcase Canada’s creative resources worldwide and that it will also open new opportunities for me.

Collaborations/projects for 2023?

I am releasing a 2023 calendar featuring 12 original images that I have been working on with my regular collaborator Justin Aranha, which is one of my favorite projects so far!
