Five graduates from across University of the Arts London have been named in the New Year Honours List 2025.
Alumni and former staff from 4 of our Colleges were recognised; Camberwell College of Arts, Central Saint Martins, London College of Communication and Wimbledon College of Arts.
Multi-award-winning Costume Designer Sandy Powell has been made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for her services to Costume Design. Sandy studied Theatre Design at Central School of Art and Design (now part of the Central Saint Martins) in 1981, and in 2018 became an Honorary Fellow of UAL.
Two alumni received OBEs (Officer's of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire); Graphic Designer Neville Brody, a graduate of London College of Printing (now LCC) and 2010 Honorary Fellow, for his services to Design; and John Brown for his services to Charity.
John graduated from LCP in 1974 before going on to have a successful career in publishing. He is now a Trustee for the School for Social Entrepreneurs and Camara Education, and Panel Chair for Wild Frontiers Travel.
Jewellery Designer Romilly Saumarez-Smith has been recognised for her services to the Arts. She graduated from Camberwell College of Arts, as well as being a former member of staff at LCP.
Two alumni were made MBE’s (Member's of the Order of the British Empire); Theatre Designer Roger Glossop and Contemporary Artist Shantell Martin.
Roger, Director and Trustee of The Old Laundry Theatre, was recognised for his services to Theatre and the Performing Arts. He graduated from Wimbledon College of Arts.
New York-based artist Shantell Martin was recognised for her services to the British Arts and to Charity. Shantell graduated from Central Saint Martins in 2003, with a BA in Graphic Design. In 2023 she was made an Honorary Fellow of UAL, and in 2022 the Alumni of Colour Association co-hosted the official launch of her first monograph, Shantell Martin: Lines.
Amanda Berry, Chief Executive of The Royal Foundation and former CEO of BAFTA, and 2022 UAL Honorary Doctor was awarded a CBE for services to Creative Industries and Charity. Rebecca Salter RA was recognised for her services to Art, as President of the Royal Academy. Rebecca is a former Associate Lecturer at Camberwell College of Arts.
More than 1,200 recipients received honours this year across all sectors. The New Year Honours are awarded by the King following recommendations by the prime minister or senior government ministers. Members of the public can also recommend people for an award.
