Biography

I lead the MRes Art course and the MRes Art: Theory and Philosophy pathway.

After higher education studying art history and philosophy I worked chiefly in art schools as a theorist and writer: at Goldsmiths' in the nineties and Byam Shaw School of Art, London where I initiated the Masters course in Fine Art in 2000. I took up the leadership of the Masters course at Central Saint Martins in 2011 where, amongst other things, I have established the college as an important public forum for debate in art theory and philosophy involving speakers with international reputations (recordings of these events are published on the course website).

My work is informed by contemporary debates about art, politics and philosophy embracing especially continental philosophy from Kant to the present, psychoanalytic theory and the Marxist intellectual tradition.

My published writings include articles and art reviews as well as books that help guide readers and students through the subjects of philosophy and art. These books include 'Introducing Kant' (Icon Books, 1996), 'Introducing Aesthetics' (Icon Books, 2007), 'Philosophers on Art, From Kant to the Present, A Critical Reader' (Columbia University press, 2010), 'Introducing Slavoj Žižek' (Icon Books, 2011) and 'Introducing Continental Philosophy' (Icon Books, 2013).

Presently I'm preparing a book about philosophers writings on cinema (for publication by Columbia University press) - a hugely enjoyable subject as I get to watch and discuss lots of films with my students!
