Biography

I have directed in the theatre for over 25 years and have been the recipient of several awards for my productions. I have been Artistic Director of four varied theatre companies; Contact Theatre, Manchester; Oxford Stage Company; Liverpool Playhouse and The Unicorn Theatre, London. I've also worked at The National Theatre and in the West End.

My overseas work has taken me to New York, South Africa, Indonesia, Japan, Denmark, Singapore, Canada and The Philippines. I taught and directed at most of the major drama schools before my appointment at Drama Centre London.

What I teach

I am a very experienced theatre director and have directed many Shakespeare and Brecht plays as well as commissioning new plays.

My teaching is based on detailed and specific textual analysis, and moves students towards an understanding of strong theatrical presentation. Given my background, I am always keen to emphasise the practicalities of working in the profession.

I have been inspired by Lepage, Brook, James Thierrie, Joan Littlewood and Ken Campbell.
