Gemma has worked in various countries, including Peru. Her love of adventure, communication and management led her to become an overland tour leader in Latin America. She completed an MSc in Tourism at the University of Surrey, doing her dissertation with the Costa Rica Park Service. Later Gemma worked for the World Tourism Organization in Madrid and then returned to Peru to undertake the fieldwork for her Ph.D on the role of the tour guide in sustainable heritage tourism.

Gemma is on the Editorial Board of Pasos, the Journal of Tourism & Cultural Heritage. She is an active writer and has delivered papers at UK and international conferences and contributed to various textbooks and her research interests include the material and visual culture of tourism, film tourism, service quality and cross-cultural communication and management for conservation.

Research interests

Cross-cultural communication, service sector management, organisational development, destination image and tourism.
