Letterpress is an artisan printing technique that has been around for hundreds of years that involves printing words or designs with ink whilst impressing the image into thick, soft paper.

This comprehensive course will teach you the conventions of letterpress printing. You will have the opportunity to explore the tactile characteristics and qualities of traditional typefaces and engage with the application of the typographic point system and work / character-spacing in a non-digital environment.

Topics Covered

  • Simple two-colour composition
  • Registration and imposition
  • Proofing – black and white, and colour
  • Preparation for printing
  • Principles and conventions of letterpress type
  • The point system
  • System for spacing and setting measures
  • Setting justified and unjustified type
  • Use of different text-sizes: text, display and poster

  • Explore and utilise the tactile characteristics of letterpress typefaces
  • Apply the conventions and practices of letterpress printing
  • Confidently apply letterpress typesetting skills to printed outcomes

Tutor information

Marta Dos Santos graduated from London College of Communication in 2013 with a BA (Hons) in Graphic and Media Design, specialising in typography. Following the degree, she worked with Alan Kitching for two years before taking up the role of letterpress technician at London College of Communication’s letterpress workshop. Her interest in letterpress lies in the technical rather than artistic aspect of printing, and she is currently working towards an MA in Chinese Studies, where she's researching the history of books & printing in pre-modern China, as well as majoring in Modern Chinese Literature.

Materials

Please prepare a small phrase or quote before-hand that you'd like to print into a poster. You may want to bring an old t-shirt or shirt to prevent your clothes getting dirty.
