This unique, highly interactive course will introduce you to the concept of designing places through the sense of smell. For professionals and students across the creative fields and for fragrance lovers, it will provide you with a basic knowledge of fragrance and sensory design skills.
Lead by a combination of olfactory experts you will explore how to use scents to enhance projects in the fields of design and architecture, marketing and communication.
The course includes:
- Developing a cross-sensory understanding of fragrances
- How scents can affect emotions
- The scents that form the perfumer's palette
- Blending scents: ingredients, accords and compositions
- Analysing a specific environment and developing scent design solutions
- How social and cultural fashions are reflected in perfume
- How to translate an idea with fragrance

The fee includes a personal perfume kit which can be used as a reference for future projects, as well for further home study.

All levels. The course format accommodates all levels, from beginners to advanced. Participants have included experienced professionals from perfume/design industries as much as beginners from these and other fields. You should have an interest in the subject area and a desire to learn but no previous experience is required.
Your course place is confirmed once you have booked online or via the phone using a credit or debit card. There is no deadline for booking. Places are offered on a first come, first served basis, and all courses have a maximum number of students. We suggest you book early to avoid disappointment.
Nicola Pozzani is a graduate from the Universita dell’Immagine of Milan, where he studied perfumery under Master Perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena, started his career in the fragrance industry with leading global companies Symrise and LVMH. Founder of S Sense, The Senses of Perfume, he trains and consults on fragrance-related projects worldwide, ranging from commercial perfumery to olfactory art. Nicola has received further training from Master Perfumer Christophe Laudamiel, with whom he animated the 'Duft-Visions' scent workshops in Berlin and whom he assisted in the production of scent sculptures for the Venice Architecture Biennale 2014. He has been a guest speaker, amongst others, for the British Society of Perfumers in the UK and the Scent Marketing Institute in New York.
Marianne Martin is a perfumer or 'nose' and has been working in the fragrance industry for over 40 years, mostly from the UK but supplying markets around the world. She has had the honour of being president of the British Society of Perfumers. Since 2011 Marianne has been lecturing in perfumery for the MSc in Cosmetic Science at the London College of Fashion and enjoys sharing her passion for perfumery.
Joanna Norman has spent nearly 30 years working with fragrance and was originally trained by leading supplier, IFF, in both London and Paris. Her professional background includes all aspects of fragrance development, marketing, sales and training. Researching fashion and fragrance at the Royal College of Art fuelled Joanna's passion to explore perfumery and sensory design combining aesthetics and business. Joanna is currently the chair of the Jasmine Awards and member of the Fragrance Foundation Education Committee pioneering the use of the sense of smell in primary education.
