Third Year Costume event at the National Gallery: Lorenzo Lotto Portraits

An evening combining performances, installations and tableaux at London’s National Gallery will showcase the design and interpretation skills of Wimbledon’s third year students on BA (Hons) Costume for Theatre and Screen.

Taking as their inspiration will be a major exhibition of portraits by the early 16th century artist, Lorenzo Lotto (about 1480 – 1556/7.

Celebrated as one of the greatest portraitists of the Italian Renaissance, Lotto uniquely portrayed a cross section of middle-class sitters, among them clerics, merchants, and humanists. He depicted men, women, and children in compositions embedded with symbolism and imbued with great psychological depth.

The prominent addition of objects which hinted at the social status, interests, and aspirations of his subjects added meaning to each work.

Some of these objects, including carpets, sculpture, jewellery, and other personal belongings will be displayed as part of the exhibition.

Interpretation students will respond directly to a chosen portrait and recreate the costume historically accurately including all trims, accessories and styling. The garment would be produced for a specific model who physically responds to the original sitter.

The Design cohort who are specifically interested in the symbolism and associated artefacts that are represented in Lotto’s portraits to create a narrative around the subject. They will design costumes utilising the information provided about the sitter in the portrait to create new and original costumes in response to the character portrayed.

This FREE costume event will take place on Friday 7 December 2018 and will commence at 6pm (tbc). No booking required.
