Mephisto follows a theatre company – their politics, art, loves and loyalties – through the rise of the Third Reich in Germany in the 1930s. The lead actor in the company is offered fame and fortune by the Nazi regime, but these things come at a terrible price and while his friends, comrades and lovers make the ultimate sacrifice in the face of fascism, the actor makes a very different choice...
This year’s graduating class, Group 55, presents Mephisto by Ariane Mnouchkine, adapted from the novel by Klaus Mann, translated from the French by Timberlake Wertenbaker. The production will be directed by Georgina Sowerby.
Mephisto is filled with an incredible cast of characters, many of them based on real-life artists and heroes, and is perfect for a young company about to step out into the world in 2019.
