Maria is an Associate of the Social Design Institute, a partnership continued after her work at the institute as Postdoctoral Research Fellow in 2019 and 2020. Her research interests span design, education and sociology, including social learning, public sociology and participatory design that enriches communities’ social and cultural capital, especially with children and young people in educational contexts.
Maria gained her first degree in History and Archaeology from the School of Philosophy at the Aristotle University in Thessaloniki (Greece); she also holds a Master’s Degree in Heritage Education and Interpretation from the International Centre for Cultural and Heritage Studies, School of Arts and Cultures, University of Newcastle, and a PhD from Sheffield University, School of Architecture and Department of Sociological Studies.
Her academic work includes publications in journals, such as The Educational Forum, Children’s Geographies, Discourse: Studies in the Cultural Politics of Education, Co-Design, International Journal of Urban and Regional Research, Oxford Bibliographies, book chapters, conference proceedings and presentations in the UK, Greece, and elsewhere in Europe and America.
