Course description

Drawing for Textiles is an exciting and practical course that will help you develop your drawing skills for textile design. Using your sketchbook you will learn how to develop your own original and innovative textile design ideas.

You will explore the relationship between your visual research and your design development, developing your concepts and patterns designs through set activities including: experimental expressive drawing, mark making, gesture, drawing large scale, drawing with new tools, creating texture and creating collaged drawings.

Using the vital skill of abstracting from your drawings you will explore ways to translate your ideas into various textile mediums through pattern, colour, texture and form, whilst discovering your own individual and personal style. 
The skills learnt on this course will be skills you will be able to use time and time again as a Textile Designer.

Course outcomes
You will leave with a developed sketchbook filled with new and exciting drawings, made in various media and techniques. You will understand how research skills can be used to create successful designs that will help you when responding to textile design briefs for professional projects in industry or further study.

Who should attend
Anyone with an interest in the textile design process looking to create new textile ideas through drawing.  Whether you are considering studying Textile Design further or keen to pursue a career in textiles for Fashion, Interior Design and other textile pathways. You may want to progress onto the Textile Print Design Short Course.

  • As long as you attend a minimum of 80% of your classes, we will provide you with a certificate of attendance. 
  • We always recommend you attend all of the classes so that you get the most out of the experience! 
  • Certificates are great to complement your cv. 

This course is scheduled to run on campus in a face-to-face delivery format. Please note that due to the ongoing pandemic situation this course may be adapted in line with UK government guidance or other operational requirements. This may include changing course location (to another UAL site), cancellation of the course, or moving part or all of the course online. In the event of any changes being required we will inform you as soon as possible and support you in any changes required. Please bear this in mind when making any travel, visa, or accommodation arrangements.

Materials

Please bring the following materials with you on the first day:

  • An A4 or A3 sketchbook
  • A selection of drawing equipment e.g.: drawing pencils, charcoal, felt tips.
  • Masking tape
  • Paint brushes – at least one large and one small one
  • Black marker pens
  • Soft Pastels a few different colours
  • Paint – either watercolours, gouache, acrylic or coloured ink is fine
  • A pencil sharpener and eraser
  • Scraps of different colour papers or things that can be ripped up and collaged with.
  • Inspirational imagery - loose sheets - this might be photocopies, magazine cut outs, your own photography. This imagery will help to inspire your project on the course so please aim to bring a minimum of ten inspirational images.. and more if you like.
  • Small fabric scraps or interesting scraps of texture
