Course description

Day one - Fibres and Fabric includes a mixture of theory and practical exercises, delivered by a textile technology expert.

Day two - Fabric Construction looks at how the construction of different fabrics helps to determine their characteristics, quality and cost.

For any career in fashion an understanding of fabrics is a must. This fabric construction course looks at how the construction of different fabrics helps to determine their characteristics, quality and cost. You will gain an understanding of the production processes of weaving and knitting, including dobby and jacquard weaving and weft and warp knitting and the related terminology will be explained. This will give you the knowledge you need to grow your own creativity and explore the different uses of a wider variety of fabrics. This course is universally relevant and normally train people from all over the world.

The basic weave and knit structures will be examined and a wide range of yarns and fabrics, including woven, knitted and non-woven fabric constructions will be available for you to study and experiment with.

Day three - Colouring and Finishing Fabrics examines the characteristics and qualities of the different fabric colouration processes in relation to quality and cost. It also looks at a wide range of different fabric finishes and how they transform the fabric. The different methods of both dyeing and printing are explained and examined.

You will be introduced to the various terms used to demonstrate the wide variety of colouring techniques available. Fabric finishing will also be discussed and various aesthetic, functional and special finishes described and samples shown.

Day four - Quality and Testing examines the quality aspects of different fashion fabrics. It also looks at the benefits of textile testing.

This day looks at quality in textile and clothing products and examines the main textile testing methods and how to interpret the test results. Using relevant standards, a range of common textile test methods will be examined and how to interpret and evaluate the test results is explained. You will also examine the benefits of textile testing, how to select relevant tests for different end products, and how the fabric performance largely determines the quality of the final garment.
