Your Japanese class will expose you to authentic language through listening and reading activities with an emphasis on functional uses. The classes focus on speaking, pronunciation, reading and written communication.

During your 8 week Japanese, Arts and Culture course, you will explore a variety of interesting topics such as architecture, design, fashion and society, at the same time as improving your ability to communicate confidently in the Japanese language.

Course fees

The price per 8 week course is £215 and this includes all learning materials.

Time

Classes are from 6pm to 8.30pm one evening a week.

Location

The weekly evening classes take place at UAL Language Centre, 272 High Holborn WC1V 7EY, which is just a 3 minute walk from Holborn underground station in central London.


Syllabus and course details

The topics you will cover on your Japanese, Arts and Culture course may differ according to student needs and interests.

Our evening language courses in Japanese are built around an arts and culture context. You will learn Japanese and explore a variety of cultural and arts topics including architecture, cuisine, culture, design, fashion, society and more.

Over the 8 weeks of the Japanese Beginner Part One course, you will:

  • be introduced to asking and answering simple questions on familiar topics
  • learn numbers, time telling and prices
  • be able to order food in a restaurant and make arrangements
  • talk about your daily routine on the present and past tenses
  • learn functional language and vocabulary related to food, the city, travelling, professions, leisure and your home
  • work towards improving your interactional, listening and speaking skills through pair and group work
  • be introduced to the Japanese writing system, practise writing with a brush pen
  • be able to describe feelings, preferences
  • learn vocabulary related to fashion, the urban space and food
  • learn about Japanese artists, society, architecture, etiquette and more

There is a focus on speaking and pronunciation skills as well as using language for practical purposes.

Book Japanese Beginner Part 1

Week 1: Introduction to Language, Arts and Culture

Language Content: Japanese writing system: greetings; numbers 0 -100; introducing yourself (nationalities, occupations, telephone numbers etc.)

Arts and Culture Content: Write your own name with a brush pen

Week 2: Cuisine and Culture

Language Content: Food and drink vocabulary; numbers 100 – 100000; ordering in a restaurant (using counters tsu/nin)

Arts and Culture Content: Japanese dining etiquette

Week 3: Art and Politics

Language Content: Vocabulary for arts; likes/dislikes – favourite artist; describe what you do as an artist

Arts and Culture Content: Japanese artists' quiz

Week 4: Urban Spaces

Language Content: Place vocabulary; daily routine verbs; describe what you do or did with your friends and family

Arts and Culture Content: Japanese society structure

Week 5: Movement and Time

Language Content: Describe where you go/went; transport vocabulary; telling time

Arts and Culture Content: Japanese travel information

Week 6: Modernism

Language Content: Arranging to meet with your friends and do something together; describe your feelings (adjectives)

Arts and Culture Content: Japanese modern architectures

Week 7: Fashion and Society

Language Content: Fashion vocabulary; vocabulary around colours; describe what you want

Arts and Culture Content: Japanese fashion designers

Week 8: Design and Architecture

Language Content: Locations; ask where it is

Book Japanese Beginner Part 1

Our evening language courses are built around an arts and culture context. You will explore a variety of topics including architecture, cuisine, culture, design, fashion, society and more.

Over the 8 weeks of the Japanese Beginner Part Two course, you will:

  • build on the basic structures and vocabulary you learnt in part one of the course
  • review verbs, adjective, numbers, particles and time from part one of the course
  • talk in the past and describing experiences
  • learn to give and to receive
  • further your understanding and grasp of the Japanese writing system
  • learn about Japanese houses, location and house rules
  • learn about the different verb groups to describe your daily routine
  • practise katakana a-ko/ sa-to/ na-ho and ra-n
  • give and receive directions
  • learn about Japanese festivals and clothing

There is a focus on speaking and pronunciation skills as well as using language for practical purposes.

Week 1: Introduction to Language, Arts and Culture

Language Content: Daily routine revision; Verb revision; Time revision; Particle revision; Katakana a-ko

Arts and Culture Content: Onomatopoeia

Week 2: Cuisine and Culture

Language Content: Revision of the usage of i-adjectives and na-adjectives; Describing how the weekend was; Katakana sa-to

Arts and Culture Content: Setsubun

Week 3: Art and Politics

Language Content: Giving and receiving; Agemasu/moraimasu/kuremasu; Oshiemasu/naraimasu/kashimasu/karimasu; Katakana na-ho

Arts and Culture Content:  Japanese Valentine’s day

Week 4: Urban Spaces

Language Content: Japanese houses; Floors of the building; Describing where the things/people are; Katakana ma-yo

Arts and Culture Content: Japanese house rules

Week 5: Movement and Time

Language Content: Locations; Asking where something is; Katakana ra-n

Arts and Culture Content: Japanese traditional houses

Week 6: Modernism

Language Content: Verb groups; Describe daily routine using te-form; Katakana practice

Arts and Culture Content: Girl’s day festival

Week 7: Fashion and Society

Language Content: ~te kudasai; Directions – massugu ittekudasai/migi ni magattekudasai; Katakana practice
