Your Italian, Arts and Culture evening classes will expose you to authentic language through listening and reading activities with an emphasis on functional uses. The classes focus on speaking, pronunciation, reading and written communication.

The classes are built around an arts and culture context. During your eight week Italian course, you will explore a variety of interesting topics such as architecture, design, fashion and society, at the same time as improving your ability to communicate confidently in the Italian language.

Course fees

The price per 8 week course is £215 and this includes all learning materials.

Time

Classes are from 6pm to 8.30pm one evening a week.

Location

The  classes take place at UAL Language Centre, 272 High Holborn WC1V 7EY, which is just a 3 minute walk from Holborn station in central London.

Syllabus and course details

The Arts and Culture content of the syllabus includes some of the topics you might cover. They may differ according to student needs and interests..

Our evening language courses in Italian are built around an arts and culture context. You will learn Italian and explore a variety of cultural and arts topics including architecture, cuisine, culture, design, fashion, society and more. Each level consists of three parts over the course of three terms.

Over the 8 weeks of the Italian Beginner 1 evening course, you will:

  • be introduced not only to the Italian language but also to different aspects of the arts and culture of Italy
  • explore functional language related to Italian cuisine, fashion, architecture and holidays.
  • be introduced to vocabulary for shopping, accessories and clothes, food and drink, and interiors
  • learn how to describe urban spaces, clothing, architecture
  • learn how to express your likes and dislikes
  • do reading and listening tasks
  • engage in dialogues and practice your writing skills.

There is a focus on speaking and pronunciation skills as well as using language for practical purposes.

Week 1: Introduction to Language, Arts and Culture

Language Content: Greetings; introduce yourself; the Italian alphabet; nationality; numbers; masculine/feminine

Arts and Culture Content: History of the Italian language - a language that is just 100 years old

Week 2: Cuisine and Culture

Language Content: Order at the bar and ask for the price; singular and plural; pronunciation rules

Arts and Culture Content: What and where - every region has his own traditional food

Week 3: Art and Politics

Language Content: The construction of the verb ‘like’; numbers; talk about your tastes

Arts and Culture Content:  Italian art - is just art or a political manifesto?

Week 4: Urban Spaces

Language Content: Describe the urban space: there is and there are: indeterminate articles

Arts and Culture Content:  What makes Italian environment special and characteristic; what you can find only in Italy?

Week 5: Movement and Time

Language Content: Describe your holiday; months and days of the week; verb conjugation for singular (I, you, he/she)

Arts and Culture Content:  The mysterious places in Tuscany

Week 6: Modernism

Language Content: Describe a city; close/far/between; recap of ‘there is’ and ‘there are’ and verbs

Arts and Culture Content: The coolest Italian inventions

Week 7: Fashion and Society

Language Content: Clothes, shops and shopping; colours; definite articles

Arts and Culture Content: The stylist and his or her style

Week 8: Design and Architecture

Language Content: Describe a building; verb conjugation for plurals (we, you, they)

Arts and Culture Content:  Italian architecture around the world
