German, Arts and Culture Language Course

Evening German language course at the UAL Language Centre in London. Learn German and explore German arts and culture, with classes from beginner level.

Why choose German, Arts and Culture?


On your German, Arts and Culture course you will learn authentic language through listening and reading activities with an emphasis on functional uses. The classes also focus on speaking, pronunciation and on reading and written communication.

During the 8-week course, you will explore a variety of interesting topics such as architecture, design, fashion and society, at the same time as improving your ability to communicate in German.

Fees, location and time


Course fees

The  8-week course fee is £198. This includes all learning materials.

Location

The  classes take place at UAL Language Centre, 272 High Holborn WC1V 7EY, which is just a 3-5 minute walk from Holborn or Chancery Lane stations in central London.

Course dates

Our German classes for autumn term are now fully booked. Our next courses will be in spring term, week commencing 20 January 2020. Sign up to our newsletter and we will email you with the next available course dates and information.

Time

Class times are from 6pm to 8pm, 1 evening a week.

Class level


Our classes all start at beginner level, and we also offer other levels at different times during the year for some courses.

After studying Beginner Part 1 for 8 weeks, students would progress to Beginner Part 2 which lasts for 8 weeks, then can take Beginner Part 3 for another 8 weeks. The next level after Beginner is Elementary, followed by Pre-intermediate, then Intermediate or above.

Syllabus and course details

The arts and culture part of your German course includes some of the topics you will study. They may differ according to student needs and interests.

Our German evening language courses are built around an arts and culture context. You will learn German and explore a variety of cultural and arts topics including architecture, cuisine, culture, design, fashion, society and more.

Over the 8 weeks of the German Beginner Part 1 course, you will:

  • listen to simple dialogues and be introduced to how to greet others and introduce yourself
  • learn to make simple requests including ordering food and drink and making your way around town
  • explore vocabulary for each of the topics above and practice dialogues to use the language and activities associated with each
  • be given the opportunity to read simple texts and write your own. Through these text and listening tasks you will be introduced to the structure of the language
  • learn numbers, days of the week, professions, countries, colours and other expression relating to your surroundings
  • learn noun and adjective forms including the impact of gender, and present, past and perfect tenses
  • learn about German cuisine, artists, culture, fashion and architecture

There is a focus on speaking and pronunciation skills as well as using the language for practical purposes.

Week 1: Introduction to Language, Arts and Culture

Language Content: Greetings; Introductions, asking for and giving personal information; Country names; The German alphabet and numbers

Arts and Culture Content: Overview of Languages, Arts and Culture; Quiz on German language, art and culture

Week 2: Cuisine and Culture

Language Content: Ordering food and drinks; Asking for the bill; Articles; Accusative case

Arts and Culture Content: German cuisine

Week 3: Art and Politics

Language Content: Professions; Verb conjugation; Describing your favourite artist

Arts and Culture Content: German artists

Week 4: Urban Spaces

Language Content: Places in the city; Prepositions of place; Adverbs of frequency

Arts and Culture Content: Leisure and entertainment in Germany

Week 5: Movement and Time

Language Content: Telling time; Days of the week; Arrangements; Responding to an invitation

Arts and Culture Content: Punctuality in Germany

Week 6: Modernism

Language Content: Activities in a city; Likes and dislikes; Verb conjugation; Planning a weekend

Arts and Culture Content: Modern living in Germany

Week 7: Fashion and Society

Language Content: Describing clothes: Colours: Adjectives; Adjective declination

Arts and Culture Content: Fashion in Germany

Week 8: Design and Architecture

Language Content: Describing your area / your home; Adjectives: Comparatives

Arts and Culture Content: German Architectural Styles; Housing; Living in Germany

Our evening German language courses are built around an arts and culture context. You will explore a variety of topics including architecture, cuisine, culture, design, fashion, society and more.

Over the 8 weeks of the German Beginner Part Two course, you will:

  • review what you learn in Beginner part one
  • build on your listening and speaking skills from term one
  • deepen your ability to interact in everyday situations related to you and your surroundings
  • learn more vocabulary and functional language and start to read more complex texts
  • be expected to work in groups and in pairs to produce language more confidently
  • look at irregularities in verb conjugation and be introduced to the future tense
  • learn about the syntactic idiosyncrasies of the language
  • deepen your ability to describe fashion and design in further depth

There is a focus on speaking and pronunciation throughout the programme as well as using the language for functional purposes.

Week 1: Introduction to Language, Arts and Culture

Language Content: Greetings; asking and responding to ‘How are you’?; asking for and giving personal information (formal and informal); regular verb conjugation (present); revision of the alphabet and numbers

Arts and Culture Content: Overview of Languages, Arts and Culture; quiz on German, Arts and Culture

Week 2: Cuisine and Culture

Language Content: Booking a table; ordering food and drinks at a restaurant; asking for the bill; Revision of numbers, articles  accusative case and useful phrases

Arts and Culture Content: German cuisine

Week 3: Art and Politics

Language Content: Describing artists / people; more professions; irregular verb conjugation (present)

Arts and Culture Content: German artists

Week 4: Urban Spaces

Language Content: Planning a trip or  a day out; future tense; revision of time and days of the week

Arts and Culture Content: Leisure and entertainment in Germany

Week 5: Movement and Time

Language Content: Talking about daily routines; separable verbs and word position in a sentence

Arts and Culture Content: Punctuality in Germany

Week 6: Modernism

Language Content: Talking about what you like doing in your spare time; likes and dislikes ‘gern’ and ‘mag’; revision of adverbs of frequency

Arts and Culture Content: Modern living in Germany

Week 7: Fashion and Society

Language Content: Talking about what you like to wear and if fashion is important for you; descriptive adjectives; adjective declination (accusative)

Arts and Culture Content: Fashion in Germany

Week 8: Design and Architecture

Language Content: Describing interior design and furniture; adjectives; colours; comparatives; adjective declination

Arts and Culture Content: German architectural styles; housing; living in Germany
