Your French, Arts and Culture classes will expose you to authentic language through listening and reading activities with an emphasis on functional uses. The classes focus on speaking, pronunciation, reading and written communication.

Our language courses are built around an arts and culture context. You will explore a variety of topics including architecture, cuisine, culture, design, fashion, society and more, at the same time as improving your ability to communicate in French.

Course Fees

The price per 8 week course is £215, which includes all learning materials.

Location

Classes are held at UAL Language Centre, 272 High Holborn WC1V 7EY, just a 3 minute walk from Holborn station in central London.

Time

Classes take place from 6pm to 8.30pm one evening a week

Syllabus and course details


The Arts and Culture content includes some of the topics you might cover. They may differ according to student needs and interests.

Our evening language courses are built around an arts and culture context. You will explore a variety of topics including architecture, cuisine, culture, design, fashion, society and more.

Over the 8 weeks of the French Beginner Part One course, you will:

  • be introduced to asking and answering simple questions on familiar topics as well as explore less familiar topics
  • learn functional language and vocabulary related to food, the city, travelling, professions, leisure and your home
  • learn the days of the week, numbers, countries, nationalities, colours and more
  • work on your interactional, listening and speaking skills through dialogues, role plays and pair/groupwork
  • gain confidence in using the language to talk about yourself, your family and your immediate surroundings, as well as and the topics outlined in the syllabus
  • learn basic verb forms, tenses, and articles
  • learn about different aspects of French and francophone arts and culture

There is a focus on speaking and pronunciation skills as well as using language for practical purposes.

Week 1: Introduction to Language, Arts and Culture

Language content: Greetings and introductions; the alphabet and numbers; spelling and pronunciation; nationalities

Arts and Culture content: Overview of French Language, Arts and Culture; quiz on French Art and Design

Week 2: Cuisine and Culture

Language content: Food and groceries; articles; ordering food and levels of formality

Arts and Culture content: Regional cuisine; the history of the baguette; the effect of the Columbian Exchange on French cuisine

Week 3: Art and Politics

Language Content: Jobs and Professions; asking for and giving personal information; conjugation of 1st group verbs

Arts and Culture Content: Art, propaganda and war; graffiti; cartoons and satire

Week 4: Urban Spaces

Language Content: Places in the city; countries and prepositions of place; contractions in articles

Arts and Culture Content: The changing cityscape; urbanisation; the Haussmann’s renovation of Paris

Week 5: Movement and Time

Language Content: Review: greetings, numbers, conjugation; construction: il y a' travel experiences; hobbies and interests

Arts and Culture Content: Cinema through the ages; music and dance; travel and photography

Week 6: Modernism

Language Content: Activities in a city; the near future negative form; numbers from 70 to 99

Arts and Culture Content: La Défense’ in Paris; Les HLMs, Le Corbusier and Brutalism; ‘Les Banlieues’ in France

Week 7: Fashion and Society

Language Content: Colours; describing clothes; expressing opinion; ‘-er’ verbs related to fashion

Arts and Culture Content: Aesthetics and generation; clothing and politics; French sub-cultures and caricatures

Week 8: Design and Architecture

Language Content: Describing your home; stating your preferences; rooms and activities at home

Arts and Culture Content: The evolution of Parisian architecture; architecture and Versailles; French architectural styles

Our evening language courses are built around an arts and culture context. You will explore a variety of topics including architecture, cuisine, culture, design, fashion, society and more.

Over the 8 weeks of the French Pre-Intermediate Part One course, you will:

  • learn how to describe people, places and personality in more detail
  • describe flavours, textures, appearance, material and shapes
  • explore different aspects of French and francophone arts and culture
  • use functional language pertinent to television, design, fashion and the urban surroundings
  • work on improving your spoken communication and interaction; this is achieved through listening, speaking, pair and group work and role-plays.
  • Deepen your knowledge of tenses, reflexive verbs and conjugation
  • be given the opportunity to use the language you learn in class, in reading, writing, speaking and listening.

There is a focus on oral communication and pronunciation as well as using language for functional and practical purposes.

Week 1: Introduction to Language, Arts and Culture

Language content: Greetings; talking about celebrities; describing appearance and personality (adjectives)

Arts and Culture content: Overview of French, Arts and Culture; quiz on French art and design

Week 2: Cuisine and Culture

Language content: Describing local specialities; describing tastes / flavours / textures; designing a menu

Arts and Culture content: Regional cuisine or the history of the baguette

Week 3: Art and Politics

Language content: Vocabulary about TV

Arts and Culture content: Art, propaganda and war; graffiti; cartoons and satire

Week 4: Urban Spaces

Language content: Places in the city; buildings in the city (+ listening exercise); vocabulary about the city

Arts and Culture content: The changing cityscape; urbanisation; the Haussmann’s renovation of Paris

Week 5: Movement and Time

Language content: Habits; conjugation 1st group – present tense; reflexive verbs

Arts and Culture content: Cinema through the ages; music and dance; travel and photography

Week 6: Modernism

Language content: Prepositions of place + country; qu’est-ce qu’il y a à + infinitive; tourism: finding out about local activities

Arts and Culture content: ‘La Défense’ in Paris; Les HLMs, Le Corbusier and Brutalism; ‘Les Banlieues’ in France

Week 7: Fashion and Society

Language content: Clothes: vocabulary/describing clothes; functional language in a shop

Arts and Culture content: Aesthetics and generation; clothing and politics; French sub-cultures and caricatures

Week 8: Design and Architecture

Language content: Materials / shapes; planning the perfect city; the future simple; review

Arts and Culture content: The evolution of Parisian architecture; architecture and Versailles; French architectural styles
