MA Social and Data Journalism is a practice-led course that brings together two of the fastest growing and dynamic areas in contemporary journalism.

On this new course, you’ll research and deliver your own journalistic project in the fields of data and social journalism, exploring areas in news and investigation as well as in cultural, lifestyle and feature-based journalism.

Course details

MA Social and Data Journalism is a practice-based course where you'll develop key skills in the most exciting new fields of journalism, informed by reflection and critical theory.

The course encourages the development of social and data journalism in news and investigation as well as in cultural, lifestyle and feature-based journalism, preparing you for jobs such as data journalist, social media journalist and interactive editor.

You’ll develop the key practical skills and contextual and ethical understanding needed to take up positions in the two of the fastest growing fields in contemporary journalism, as well as creating new theoretical and practice-based knowledge in these still emerging areas.

What can you expect?

You’ll learn how to collect, manage and interpret data in order to find and tell journalistic stories in a range of media.

Practical and technical workshops, seminars, lectures, collaborative projects and individual briefs will equip you with the experience and understanding to operate in these new and evolving fields.

Who is this course for?

MA Social and Data Journalism is for proactive, creative and critical thinkers who are fascinated by the potential of the intersection between journalism, data and technology.

We look for people with a background in research, journalism, design or technology who are passionate about telling stories in innovative ways. This course might also appeal to journalists wanting to develop a specialism in an important and rapidly developing field.

Course units

Each course is divided into units, which are credit-rated. The minimum unit size is 20 credits. The MA course structure involves six units, totalling 180 credits.

Autumn, Term One

Units summary:

  • Social media 1 (20 credits)
  • Data journalism (40 credits)

Spring, Term Two

Units summary:

  • Social media 2 (20 credits)
  • Data journalism cont'd (40 credits)
  • Collaborative unit (20 credits)

Summer, Term Three

  • Final major project (60 credits)

Autumn, Term Four

  • Final major project (60 credits)

Course structure

The information outlined is an indicative structure of the course. Entry requirements

The course will welcome applicants with a BA (Hons) qualification or a background in journalism, the media or a related field, who can demonstrate (through personal statement, portfolio or interview) an interest in the use of data and social media tools in the creation of journalistic narratives.

The course will also be appropriate for students with a background in design or computing, who are looking to develop a journalistic practice. It will also be suitable for applicants currently working in journalism who are interested in developing a specialism in social and data.

If you do not have the required qualifications, but do have professional experience, you may be eligible to gain credit for previous learning and experience through the Accreditation of Prior and Experiential Learning (APEL) i.e. professional experience or a combination of courses and work experience.

Educational level may be demonstrated by:

  • Honours degree;
  • Possession of equivalent qualifications;
  • Prior experiential learning, the outcome of which can be demonstrated to be equivalent to formal qualifications otherwise required;
  • Or a combination of formal qualifications and experiential learning which, taken together, can be demonstrated to be equivalent to formal qualifications otherwise required.

APEL (Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning)

Applicants who do not meet these course entry requirements may still be considered in exceptional cases. The course team will consider each application that demonstrates additional strengths and alternative evidence. This might, for example, be demonstrated by:

  • Related academic or work experience
  • The quality of the personal statement
  • A strong academic or other professional reference
  • OR a combination of these factors

Each application will be considered on its own merit but we cannot guarantee an offer in each case.

Language requirements (International/EU)

All classes are conducted in English. If English is not your first language, we strongly recommend you let us know your English language test score in your application.

If you have booked a test or are awaiting your results, please indicate this in your application. When asked to upload a CV as part of your application, please include any information about your English test score.

  • IELTS 7.0 (or equivalent) is required, with a minimum of 6.0 in each of the four skills
  • If your first language is not English, you can check you have achieved the correct IELTS level in English on the Language Requirements page

Selection criteria

Offers will be made based on the following selection criteria, which applicants are expected to demonstrate:

  • Evidence of a critical knowledge and/or experience of social and data journalism that would indicate potential to successfully undertake the programme of study
  • An academic or professional background in a relevant area
  • A well-articulated rationale for applying for the course that demonstrates an enthusiasm for social and data journalism
  • A demonstrable capacity for intellectual enquiry and openness to new ideas

What happens next

Portfolio and interview information

All applicants are asked to submit as part of their application an electronic portfolio of work, or of relevant written or published work. The portfolio should include examples of work from either education or professional practice.

Applicants will need to demonstrate knowledge of the world of journalism and to engage in critical discussion. Please upload a maximum of 20 items of work ‘images’, in one PDF upload.

All potential candidates are interviewed, either in person at LCC, or via Skype or telephone.

Deferrals

Deferring an offer

If you are offered a place for 2019/20 but wish to defer to 2020/21, information on how to do this and who to contact can be found in your offer letter. Additionally, International applicants should pay the deposit in order to defer. In all cases, deferred places will be held for one year.
