This course is designed to help students to understand the nature of creativity by letting go of stale habits and conditioning that prevent one from making contact with the natural flow of creative energy, which, when it touches one's centre, we experience meaning and fulfilment.
Both inner and outer worlds and their relationship to colour will be explored during the course, through painting from a life model as well as from imagination.
The course is led throughout by directions from the tutor. This allows the student freedom to touch on this mystery of creativity through their painting.
By working both in a group and individually, you are encouraged to shed stale and repetitive habits that prevent the natural flow of creative energy.
Each session begins with a colour exercise to 'tune in' to various colour harmonies and how they relate to each other through vibration etc. Music and movement, where appropriate, are used to aid understanding. This is followed up by applying it to working from a life model (external world) and later, working with a given subject, from the imagination (internal world).
Students will have the opportunity to work with a partner or in a group to gain new insights that can be fed into their own individual work. A very basic technique of mono printing will be introduced and incorporated to encourage spontaneity and the element of surprise!
Who should take this course?
The course suits students who are interested in enhancing what they already know and getting rid of creative blocks that prevent them from developing as a creative being.
It is also helpful for students who are thinking of applying to an art college and want to enhance their portfolio.
Entry requirements: None, except an open mind and heart which asks for commitment to explore new ways of 'seeing' and the courage to take chances and be vulnerable.
Level: As each student works and is supported by the tutor at their own level of development in an atmosphere both stimulating and non-competitive, the course is suitable for both beginners and the more advanced students.

Ruth Eisenhart studied with the eminent teacher and painter Cecil Collins for 8 years. She incorporates some of his unique methods as well as her own intuitive understanding and style into her teaching in order to help students realise their own creative potential.
Please bring with you to the first session:
- cartridge paper medium weight (200gms) or any suitable medium weight inexpensive paper
- 4 sheets of A2 size watercolour paper
- 1 plain page notebook
- gouache or poster paints. Suggested basic colours for students to start off initially: 2 bright reds (Alizarin Rose Madder or Alizarin Crimson); 2 blues: Ultramarine or Cobalt, and Ceruleum Blue; 2 yellows: Permanent Yellow and Yellow Ochre; 1 large white; 1 small black.
- You can buy large inexpensive bottles of Tempera Poster Colours from the CSM college shop and most good art materials suppliers.
- 2 large water jars
- 3 Chinese brushes - small, medium and largish plus one chiselbrush 1.5-2 inches (3.5-5cm)
- 1 pkt (1/2 doz) 8" or 10" diameter white (strong) paper plates, or 3 white enamel plates
- kitchen roll
- small sponge.
