Film And Fine Art Short Course

Course description

Painting is one of the oldest art forms yet it has very close links with film making. Narrative, composition, lighting and editing are common elements to both forms. Many film makers have used painters such as Vermeer, Bacon and Turner for inspiration. The resulting films have carefully explored and created intricate worlds on a par with paintings.

This course offers an opportunity to make short films inspired by paintings and other art works in a gallery's collection. Students will visit the National Gallery, Tate Britain or Tate Modern to view and select paintings or art works for inspiration. An expert curator will be at hand to present the work. The group will collaborate on making short films with the assistance of an experienced award winning film maker. The paintings and other artworks will literally come to life as films are developed on the course.

Students will have hands on training in the practical skills of filmmaking and will learn to edit on Premiere Pro software. Each student will create an individual film or work in groups if they choose to. Films will be posted online at the end of the course.

Who should take this course?

Most creative careers involve generating ideas intuitively while appreciating influences from other artists and works. This is as much an upskilling course as an experience to satisfy curiosity. Suitable for writers, advertising professionals, film professionals and enthusiasts, painters, photographers.

This course is designed to use film in an impressionistic way so as to discover qualities of the medium as you work. We won't necessarily work with narrative - although you may wish to - and emphasis will be on experimentation. The point will be to transform the art works into films.
