Editorial Styling and Creative Direction Short Course

Course description

This in-depth creative direction for fashion short course will introduce you to the fashion image, the contemporary fashion media, editorial styling and creative direction. You will gain insider knowledge and industry advice and be given the cultural and historical context of the image in fashion media. By the end of the course, you will have directed and styled a number of fashion shoots and created an individual digital portfolio of your best work.

Please note:

There is some overlap of course material on John Williams The Complete Stylist, Fashion Media Styling: Editorial and this course. It is recommended that you only take one of these courses.

Who should attend?

This course is suitable for beginners. You should have an interest in the subject area and a desire to learn but no previous experience is required.

Please note: This course is for students aged 18 and over

The course includes:

  • History of the fashion stylist
  • Who are the key figures influencing fashion right now?
  • What is Creative Direction? And how does it impact brand identity and the fashion image.
  • A practical guide and tips for working as a fashion stylist and preparing shoots
  • How to communicate with different professionals within the fashion industry (Editors, PRs, Model Agencies…)
  • You will style and direct a number of fashion shoots including a fashion editorial shoot with professional photographer and make up artist
  • Visits to London exhibitions, and fashion hotspots with a guide to street style spotting and a trend safari around London
  • What is a trend? And how can we forecast fashion and lifestyle trends
  • Basic Photoshop & InDesign skills
  • Basic studio lighting & photographic skills
  • Studio shoots with different technical lighting and photographic styles
  • Creation of a personal portfolio of fashion images showing your own styling and creative direction
  • Exploration of the contemporary Fashion Industry, and how the internet has impacted on traditional fashion media
  • How to edit images into a story. How Art Direction impacts on the fashion image.
  • Post produced and graphic designed your shoots to create editorial layouts with your best images.
  • You will leave the course with an individual digital portfolio of work, and hi res files of all the imagery created on the course.

Materials

In order to fully participate in the practical exercises please bring the following materials/equipment to the first class:

  • Notebook and pen
  • Laptop or tablet
  • Camera (if you have one)
  • Laptop, for the duration of the course

    Adobe ID Login for Short Course StudentsStudents will need to create an account with Adobe (unless you already have one) in order to access the Adobe suite at the college; instructions are included below. You will need to use a personal email address to create this. If you already have an account with Adobe, please make sure you bring your login details with you on the first day of the course.Please note:
    • Creating an Adobe account is free.
    • The software will only be accessible when logged into a UAL networked computer
    • The same account can be used outside of the University, but software will only be accessible through a personal paid subscription that students will need to set up independently
    • You can still create an account on the day but doing this beforehand will save time and avoid delays to the start of the class.
    • If you already have an Adobe ID/ subscription you can use this on your short course rather than setting up a new account.
    To create an account students will need to:
    • Go to Adobe Sign in page
    • Select 'Create an account'
    • Enter your details and select ‘Create account’
