Introduction to Professional Sewing Skills

This practical sewing course will help you become familiar with the basics of machine sewing, help you build your confidence at working with a professional machine, and develop a range of related sewing skills.

The course includes:

  • Looking at different needles and threads suitable for fabric types
  • Standard stitches
  • Seaming curved edges
  • Straight edges and gathered edges together
  • Various seam types including: French seams and flat fell seams
  • Simple buttonholes
  • Topstitching
  • Trimming work and pressing


Beginners. You should have an interest in the subject area and a desire to learn but no previous experience is required.

Please note: This course is for students aged 18 and older.

Your place on the course is not confirmed until you have booked online or over the phone using a credit or debit card. There is no deadline for booking however places are offered on a first come first served basis, so book early to avoid disappointment.

Tutor Description

Siaw Lee Priddle's passion for sewing was inspired when she studied bespoke tailoring and womenswear at the London School of Fashion. Through this she expanded her sewing technical skills and has been working in the fashion industry for over fifteen years. She has worked with various manufacturing outlets including S R Gent – a major supplier for Marks & Spencer. Her work has enabled her to reach Senior Specialist Technician level at London College of Fashion and enhance her teaching skills.


In order to fully participate in the practical exercises please bring the following materials/equipment to the first class:

  • Pencil, eraser and sharpener
  • Fabric shears
  • Small sharp pointed scissors
  • Stitch ripper
  • Fine steel pins
  • Metric tape measure
  • Tailors chalk
