Pattern Cutting and Sewing Techniques (16-18 Year Olds)
On this sewing course you will learn basic sewing skills, and build confidence in various pattern cutting techniques. Through practical demonstrations and hands on experience, you'll learn how pattern pieces are shaped to make garments, and how to lay out patterns ready to cut out and make up a garment with your new found sewing skills.
The course includes:
- Dart manipulation, pivoting and slashing
- Grain lines, balance marks
- Using a ½ scale size 12 block
- Designing a simple skirt
- Pattern cutting and making a sample in calico
- Sewing techniques
- Various seam constructions
- Pressing and finishing
Beginners. You should have an interest in the subject area and a desire to learn but no previous experience is required.
Your course place is confirmed once you have booked online or via the phone using a credit or debit card. There is no deadline for booking. Places are offered on a first come, first served basis, and all courses have a maximum number of students. We suggest you book early to avoid disappointment.
Please note: University Halls of Residence accommodation is available for under 18s during the Summer period. The only hall of residence available to under 18s travelling independently is Sketch House. You MUST enter the code Youth when making your booking online. In order to fully participate in the practical exercises please bring the following materials/equipment to the first class:
- Pencil, eraser and sharpener
- Fabric shears
- Small sharp pointed scissors
- Stitch ripper
- Fine steel pins
- Metric tape measure
- Tailors chalk
