Upcycling Fashion Short Course

Course description

Every three years in Britain, a billion tonnes of clothing ends up as waste. Designers at all levels are increasingly turning their focus to sustainable ways of creating fashion designs using more environmentally friendly methods. On this practical and creative short course you will learn how to create unique, sustainably made garments and give items of clothing a new lease of life.

Using a pre-loved item of clothing, you will learn how to apply design principles and hand sewing construction techniques to make a unique piece of upcycled, sustainable clothing. You will obtain the skills needed to create numerous design ideas and based using deconstruction and reconstruction techniques. You will leave the course with a completed garment and technical file of samples.

Students will consider ethical and sustainable techniques and how individuals can play their part in stopping unwanted clothes going to landfill.

You will need to bring at least two of your own garments to use during this course.

  • As long as you attend a minimum of 80% of your classes, we will provide you with a certificate of attendance.

In order to fully participate in the practical exercises please bring the following materials/equipment to the first class:    

  • Needles
  • Needle Threader (if needed)
  • Pins
  • Tape Measure
  • Fabric Scissors
  • Tailors Chalk
  • Stitch Unpicker
  • Colour Cotton Thread
  • Assorted haberdashery (e.g. old buttons, lace, iron badges, embroidery, scraps of fabric/denim/soft leather)
  • One second hand men’s shirt (light colours only)
  • 1-2 Fashion Magazines
  • Sketch book/ Note book
  • Images or reference material for inspiration
  • Any fabrics you want to use
