Fashion Communication Summer School Short Course

Course description

Fashion is everywhere and moving at a dizzying speed. Trends are dictated by the young and communicated by the latest media outlets. This three week course is a broad introduction for beginners to the worlds of fashion journalism, advertising, PR, photography, styling, online and print exposure and art direction.

Students must come with an open mind, as much of the CSM reputation is based on thinking outside the box.

Details

The course will include:

Fashion Journalism

Students will learn how to report from the catwalks, how to write fashion news and how to develop their writing for print and online. We will cover how to promote work on social media, working with PR agencies, developing a personal writing style and much more. 

Field Trips

To learn how to write reviews, we will visit the V&A and one other fashion exhibition in London. We will visit Brick Lane for a research day for a photographic project developing a cover for a magazine. 

Fashion Styling

Students will work in groups to develop concepts for fashion shoots. They source the clothes, style and photograph the shoot themselves, and produce final photographs or a short fashion film, as well as a social media campaign to promote the work. 

Fashion Branding 

Students develop an advertising campaign for a fashion brand, including coming up with a logo for a fashion brand and advertising images, developing concepts and using their own photography and graphic design skills. 

Fashion Book 

The students come up with their own concepts for a fashion book project, and do extensive research in the unique college fashion library. They will produce a cover and a sample chapter of the work, using their writing and graphics skills. 

Fashion Archive Visit

Students have the chance to visit the fashion archive at the college, where in-house curators will reveal unique pieces from former Central Saint Martins students including Alexander McQueen and John Galliano. 

Fashion Photography and Fashion Illustration 

Students will learn how to use their photographic skills for fashion shoots, will have lessons in fashion illustration and fashion collage, in order to create original fashion images.

Interview Technique

Students will learn how journalists conduct interviews, the tips and tricks and understand how to write up interviews for magazines and newspapers in different formats. 

Research and Development

Students are taught how to use sketchbooks, photography, collage and drawing to record and develop ideas, using the research methods taught across the BA Central Saint Martins fashion courses, in order to create concepts for fashion communication projects.
