Introduction to Fashion Industry Skills for 11 to 15 Year Olds Online Short Course

Course description

A practical introduction to the fashion industry where you will be taken on a journey through the process of designing and creating a garment as well as learning the different roles involved in the industry.

Each online session will include theory and practical exercises, with homework set to further advance your learning. You will create your own brand name and logo, then carry out research to design a small collection for your brand. There will be opportunities to explore collage and fashion sketching followed by a customisation session using different mediums. You will then style and photograph your final piece to create a form of visual communication of the brand and garment.

This course will allow you to experiment with new techniques, build confidence, acquire new skills and be inspired to learn more.

  • Develop your sketchbook and portfolio work to include a brand logo, moodboard, designs in collage, visual communication, a magazine spread, look book, blog and social media post.

  • Our tutors will explain in easy to understand accessible English, if they use any special terminology we make sure they explain what it is they mean. 
  • New methodologies will be explained to you in a way that’s crystal clear and easy to understand. 
  • We even include live demonstrations of particular techniques so that you can see exactly how things should be done. 
  • We also offer a bunch of learning resources for you to access outside of the live lessons. This allows you to ensure you are up to date and you can practice and review the things that are important to you. Practice makes perfect after all!  

Live interactive classrooms:

  • We like to do things the right way, that's why all of our online classes are live, you won't find any recordings here (well apart from the recording we provide in case you miss a live session) 
  • Expect live interaction with your classmates from around the world, our students come from far and wide 
  • Ask questions of your tutor in real time 
  • Receive feedback and critique on your assignments 
  • Discuss topics related to your course in real time via your microphone and camera or if you're not feeling brave, in the chat box 
  • Miss a class? Thats ok you can catch up in a recording which is available for 2 weeks after your course runs 

A certificate of completion:

  • You've put the work in so we want to make sure you have something to show for it! 
  • As long as you attend a minimum of 80% of your classes, we will provide you with a certificate of attendance.  
  • However we always recommend you attend all of the classes so that you get the most out of the experience!  
  • Certificates are a great addition to your CV.

Materials

Materials needed for the course:

  • Notepad and pen
  • A camera/phone with camera (to take photos of work)
  • Magazines (to cut up from)
  • Paper scissors
  • Fabric scissors
  • Glue / Tape
  • Scraps of fabric (to cut up and use for collage and to use for customisation project)
  • An item to customise (ideally a plain white t-shirt or something similar of your choice)
  • Needle and thread pins (not essential)
  • Fabric glue
  • Fabric pens/paint (optional)
  • A3 and A4 plain paper
  • Pencils
  • Black fine tip pen
  • Black thick pen 0.5mm +
  • Options for colouring: colour pencil crayons/felt tips/pro markers/paint
  • Access to a printer

Technical Requirements:

Prior to the start of your course, please ensure you have:

  • A computer (PC or Mac) with an up-to-date operating system, webcam and microphone 
  • An up-to-date version of Chrome browser installed on your computer
  • A headset with microphone/headphones is recommended, but not essential
