Preparation for Creative Computing is a three-week summer course designed to develop your creative computational skills in the context of your creative practice and is delivered by the UAL Creative Computing Institute. Designed as a bridging course for current Bachelor of Arts (BA) undergrads looking to progress to UAL MSc Creative Computing. It is also suitable for Bachelor of Arts (BA) undergrads looking to enhance their studies and accelerate their practice with creative computing skills.

This intensive course will give creative arts and design students new skills and perspectives to enhance your practice and opportunities post-graduation. Structured with coding tuition in the mornings and creative project work and creative practice seminars, presentations and visits in the afternoon.  Over the three weeks you will undertake themed projects as follows: 

Week 1, Creative Coding Boot Camp: you will explore creative coding with Processing, P5 and more. You will learn to make interactive and generative visuals and explore concepts of computational creative practice through set tasks and briefs.

Week 2, Hardware: Hacking + Sensing: using hardware prototyping platforms such as Arduino and Micro-bit you will learn further electronics prototyping techniques making playful objects using a range of sensors and actuators.  

Week 3, Creative Web Development: explore HTML, CSS and JavaScript and produce experimental visual experiences using contemporary frameworks such as three.js and experience how experimental websites are built.

Course Outcomes
Through a range of creative computing skills and perspectives you will grow in your confidence with creative technology and learn to appreciate conceptual creative development. You will generate ideas and concepts that reflect a given theme and create a range of new work and experiment with various coding languages and frameworks. You will be able to add an understanding of creative computing to whichever future creative path you choose. This course will also allow you to reorient yourself and prepare for study on the MSc creative computing at UAL.

Who Should Attend
Current Bachelor of Arts (BA) undergrads looking to enhance their studies with creative computing skills. Also recommended as a bridging course for students looking to progress to UAL MSc Creative Computing.

Tutor Description

This course has been created by the founding Dean of the UAL Creative Computing Institute and will be delivered by members of the academic team.

Ben Stopher is the founding Dean of the UAL Creative Computing Institute. Ben is an academic and a designer with extensive experience as a practitioner and creative consultant in digital design and computational practice.

As a researcher, he explores how globalised digital culture shapes design practice and his doctoral research explores models of distributed and augmented ideation through speculative prototypes and user research.

Ben re-joined the university to establish the CCI from UCA, where he was Executive Dean: Faculty of Art, Media and Communication Design. Prior to that he served as a programme director at LCC, where he led the Interactive and Visual Communication Programme, encompassing interaction design, visual communication, games design and animation.

In this time Ben was the UAL academic lead for the EU funded (INTERACT mobility project. (INTERACTive Studios & Innovative Networks for Future Design Careers) and was responsible for responsible for London’s first maker faire.
