In recent times there has been a renaissance of hands-on skills, particularly those involving the lettering arts. This unique six week course gives beginners and some with previous experience an opportunity to try out three different aspects of traditional hand lettering and typography.

Each of the two week modules complement each other giving students an introduction to these rewarding techniques. The tutors are established and highly respected practitioners in their own fields and have been specially chosen because of their friendly and accessible attitude.

At the end of the course you will take a selection of lettering and letterpress examples, also including a set of notes outlining each process.

Who should take this course?
Anyone with an interest in lettering, typography, graphic design, lettering arts and traditional crafts.

Entry requirements
None. just an interest in hands-on processes and in lettering, printing and typography.

Tutor Description


Helen Ingham set up The Hi-Artz Press in 2002, producing highly expressive letterpress work with strong typographical and illustrative elements. She studied MA Communication Design at Central Saint Martins and was an intern at Hatch Showprint in Nashville. She carries out editorial and private commissions, exhibits in galleries and instructs at Central Saint Martins.

Alice Mazzilli has a background in typography and graffiti, and has a deep understanding of lettering. She apprenticed under one of the world's leading scribes and now runs her own calligraphy and lettering design business here in London, where she boasts such clients as The Royal Academy of Arts, Smythson and Mappin & Webb. She has extensive knowledge of the history of traditional calligraphy practice and the elegant Roman alphabet.

Wayne left school at 16 and began his training with a local tradesman, he has since travelled all over the world painting a wide variety signs and vehicles and his work often appears on national TV. As well as maintaining a thriving traditional sign business, he has written instructive manuals on the subject as well as teaching beginners classes at his Suffolk workshop.

  • A special sign writing brush, size 6 and Automatic lettering pen, size 4 (both are available from the College Arts Shop)
  • Pencil and ruler
