Merging traditional skills and principles with industry-standard digital tools allow image-makers to explore creativity without boundaries. In this course we will discover and practice with a range of digital illustration techniques that can be used and combined in your artwork to create layers of visual significance that can be applied to different communication projects for screen, web and print.


  • Harmony, balance, composition
  • Integration of the elements of an illustration
  • Create custom Adobe Photoshop brushes
  • Create custom Adobe Illustrator brushes
  • Create and use textures to enhance your artwork
  • Use adjustment layers, masks, blending modes to add depth to your artwork
  • Create a digital collage using different techniques
  • Combining processes: use and modify images taken with your phone with vector artwork and blending modes to create original landscapes


By the end of this course you will have;

  • Learnt a range of new techniques to enhance your Digital Illustration skillset
  • Learnt professional design techniques on Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop

Online Short Course Materials

 To take part in the Online sessions you will need:

  • An up-to-date web browser (we recommend Firefox or Chrome)
  • The latest version of Java installed on your device
  • Microphone and headphones (a headset with a microphone function is recommended)
  • Webcam

Course-specific Materials

  • Access to Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator
  • A Wacom tablet (eg. Bamboo, Intuos) is optional but recommended
  • Scanner, pencils, markers and paper to create your own digital brushes
