Course description

This course is an introduction to metalwork and welding in which you will learn many of the practical skills and techniques associated with the fabrication of steel sculpture. The aim of this 5 day course is to inspire and equip you with the skills to make and finish your own project which you can take home.

Entry requirements:

For safety reasons, you must be fluent in English so that you can fully understand health and safety requirements.

Students should have access to a computer and the software to practice outside class time. There is a free trial version of Rhino available in the internet for students to use, for both Macs and PCs. Familiarity with working on computers is needed in order to do this course.

Who should take this course?

Students interested in building on making skills, people who have an avid interest in metalworking and the processes of doing so.

  • As long as you attend a minimum of 80% of your classes, we will provide you with a certificate of attendance.
  • We always recommend you attend all of the classes so that you get the most out of the experience!
  • Certificates are great to compliment your cv.

This course is scheduled to run on campus in a face to face delivery format. Please note that due to the ongoing pandemic situation this course may be adapted in line with UK government guidance or other operational requirements. This may include changing course location (to another UAL site), cancellation of the course, or moving part or all of the course online. In the event of any changes being required we will inform you as soon as possible and support you in any changes required. Please bear this in mind when making any travel, visa, or accommodation arrangements.

Details

Topics covered:

You will be taught how to confidently weld and use all of the machinery commonly found in well-equipped metal workshops. 

Demonstrations will be given of how to create different surface textures and finishes, how to bend and make shapes from metal alongside professional fabrication techniques for construction of realised ideas. 

Full health and safety instructions will be given for a wide range of equipment including:

  • hand tools
  • grinders
  • welders
  • plasma cutters
  • pillar drills

Materials

Please bring with you to the first session:

  • Clothes that are comfortable and suitable for work (must be long sleeved and full length trousers).
  • Steel toe caps / sturdy leather boots
  • Overalls
