Product and Sustainable Design Residential Summer School for 16 to 18 Year Olds is one of our brand new residential courses specifically for 16 to 18 year olds. Keen to discover more we spoke with tutor, Alexander Hinnerskov, and asked why the course is so vital and current.

The product and sustainable residential course allows you to explore sustainability within the world of product design. It will give you an insight to the design process and teaches you the many skills used to complete a successful design project within the field of 3D objects. You are encouraged to explore ideas of sustainability and experiment with materials through sketching and model making. The course will allow you to expand your perception of sustainability and examine what is possible in the design process.

It is when you start seeing the full picture that sustainability principles can have a huge impact on what you do.

Why is sustainability so important in design?

Sustainability is so important in product design because we make stuff. Sometimes we make too much stuff or stuff that isn’t good. As conscious thinkers we should always design things that are relevant and meaningful, that don’t go to waste and end up in the bin.

How can students bring sustainability practices into their design process?

By asking more questions. Why should this product exist? Will it fulfil its purpose? Will people (re)use and keep it? If you have proper informed answers to these questions you will be starting to design more sustainable product.

What will you teach/what are the projects on the course that will encourage a more sustainable approach?

During the course we will be working with the overall design process as well as the individual steps that make up that process. This means you get to try a little bit of everything as well as gain a perspective of the whole. It is when you start seeing the full picture that sustainability principles can have a huge impact on what you do.

What skills/techniques does the course include?

You will be introduced to vital areas such as research, generating ideas, freehand sketching, model making and presentations. All these skills are taught to give you the tools that enable you to test your ideas in different ways, to ensure those ideas become the best possible products.

5 reasons you should definitely take this course:
  1. Develop your design skills
  2. Explore sustainability
  3. Design your own product
