9 Week Pre-sessional

A 9-week intensive English course for students with a conditional offer for an undergraduate or postgraduate course at University of the Arts London (UAL).

9 Week Pre-sessional is suitable for students who need to improve their English level by 0.5 IELTS bands (or equivalent).

Entry requirements

You can apply for 9 Week Pre-sessional if:

  • you have an offer for a UAL undergraduate or postgraduate course for the 2020/21 academic year
  • you need to improve your English level by 0.5 IELTS bands (or equivalent)

Course description

9 Week Pre-sessional is an intensive English language course designed to prepare you for your UAL undergraduate or postgraduate course.

Because of the coronavirus situation, we are starting Summer 9 Week Pre-sessional online. The course will continue in London for face to face teaching and assessment in September.

While the course is online, you will have:

  • 15 hours a week of tutor contact
  • 2 hours a day of online teaching from your tutor through Collaborate and the UAL Moodle learning platform
  • 1 hour per day of supervised activity, which will include different tasks such as question and answer sessions, homework feedback and student team work
  • Access to the same materials and resources we use in face to face classes.

In London, you will have 20 hours of classroom teaching a week. You will also have about 10 hours of homework and self-study tasks.

For Winter 9 Week Pre-sessional, the whole course will be face to face in London.

Your course will improve your English language skills in the context of art, design, fashion and communication. You will learn academic skills including thinking critically, presenting your work, researching and writing assignments.

You will get to know UAL facilities and resources as well as London and will learn about British culture and UK life. During your course you will make new friends and social networks.

You will have one-to-one tutorials with your tutor to discuss your progress and get advice on your studies. There will also be workshops to help you adapt to living in the UK and studying at UAL.

Our tutors

Pre-sessional English is taught by experienced English language tutors. They all have a diploma level qualification in teaching English language and some also have an MA in Linguistics or Visual Arts.

Location and timetable

9 Week Pre-sessional summer course

Your 9 Week Pre-sessional course will start online. We will start teaching you in-person in London in September.

Face to face teaching in London will be at the Foundation Centre, 1 Wilson Road, London SE5 8LU.

Online classes will take place from Monday to Friday, 9am to 12.20pm UK time (GMT +1). You will have 3 hours of classes a day. There will be a 20-minute break during the time.

In London, your classes are from Monday to Friday in the morning or the afternoon. You will have 4 hours of classes a day and breaks between lessons.

In London, usual hours are:

Monday to Friday: 9am - 1.30pm or Monday to Friday: 1.45pm - 6:15pm.

Hours can change. You will be given your class timetable when you enrol in London.

Winter 9 Week Pre-sessional

Your Winter 9 Week Pre-sessional course will be at 272 High Holborn, London WC1V 7EY.

Usually, classes are from Monday to Friday in the morning or the afternoon. Students usually have 4 hours of classes a day and breaks between lessons.

Usual hours are:

Monday to Friday: 9am - 1.30pm or Monday to Friday: 1.45pm - 6:15pm.

Hours can change. You will be given your class timetable when you enrol.


You must attend a minimum of 90% of your course, both online and face to face. If you don’t attend 90% you will fail your course.

Do not book holidays during your course. If you are absent because you are ill for more than 3 consecutive days, you must provide a certificate from an NHS doctor.


You will be assessed in academic writing, presentation and discussion, listening and reading. These assessments help you to develop the skills and knowledge you need for your main course.

To complete your course successfully, you must pass your assignments and end of course exams and attend a minimum of 90% of the course.

If you pass your course, you can progress to your main course at UAL without having to take another IELTS (or equivalent English test).

100% of students passed their 9 Week Pre-sessional course in summer 2018 and 96.6% of students passed their course in summer 2019. 100% of students passed their Winter 9 Week Pre-sessional course in 2018 and 100% of students passed their course in 2019. Pass rates usually change yearly and there is no guarantee they will stay the same.

Extra costs

You may need to buy some art materials for the London Project at the end of your course. Students usually spend around £30 to £50 on these.

Please bring a laptop or tablet with you. You will need this for research and assignments.

You will also go on class trips during your course and you will have to pay for public transport. Read the guidance from Transport for London (TfL) about fare prices .

Additional information


Insurance, provided by the company Endsleigh,is included in your fee. The policy starts 6 days before your course start date and ends 6 days after the last day of your course. The policy covers medical emergencies, theft and other events.

Students under 18

You must be over 16 years old to join a Pre-sessional course.

If you will be under 18 years old when you start your course you must send us a completed and signed Parent and Guardian Agreement (PDF 101KB) with your application. We will not give you a course offer without this agreement.

When you get your course offer you must book Hosts International Homestay accommodation and upload evidence of your booking to the UAL Applicant Portal within 2 working days. We will not confirm your place without this evidence.

When your course place is confirmed and you have your flight details, you must book an airport transfer with Hosts International and send us evidence of this booking.


We aim for an inclusive learning environment where disabled and dyslexic students can succeed.

If you want to tell us about a disability or additional needs, please to do this in your Pre-sessional or EPIC application in the UAL Applicant Portal. In the application form, select the option which best describes your condition.

The Language Centre’s Welfare Manager will contact you and ask you for medical documentation, in English, about your disability. The documentation must be issued to you by a medical professional who is able to detail what disability or additional needs you have. This documentation is used to identify what adjustments UAL can make to support you on your course.

We strongly recommend that you give us full information about any disability or additional needs you have as soon as possible. If you don’t give us enough time, we may not be able to support you from the first day of your course.
