Centre for Sustainable Fashion (CSF) at London College of Fashion was founded by designer, activist and thought leader Professor Dilys Williams in 2018. We are a collective of designers, researchers, tutors, communicators and makers. Our explorations and practices come together through shared ambitions: finding ways for fashion to facilitate, communicate, and embody the means to live well. We are contributing to a new industry that does not compromise our future or our fellows.

We're looking to student filmmakers to help us visualise the CSF mindsets for fashion and sustainability.

Context

As part of our work in fashion and sustainability we have developed a set of eight mindsets to explore the shifts required if fashion is to embrace the global imperatives of human equity and planetary boundaries. These mindsets are open to creative interpretation. The mindsets are:

  • Resilience
  • Resourcefulness
  • Activism
  • Authenticity
  • Equity
  • Sufficiency
  • Collaboration
  • Ecological Thinking

Much of the work in fashion and sustainability to date enables an exploration of fashion within its existing paradigm – an improvement of a system based on product and profit to make it more efficient in its resource use, more just to its workers, and less harmful to nature. Explorations of transformative sustainability practice - where human and ecological flourishing are the starting point – is happening, but still on the fringes of fashion.

Over the past five years, CSF has collaborated with an industry partner to explore new approaches to fashion and sustainability through fashion education. This has allowed us to work with over 1000 fashion students who are creating new visions of fashion that exemplify these mindsets. These films will be used as an expression of each mindset and later, student work developed over the course of this 5-year partnership will be mapped under these mindsets and hosted on the CSF website, where the films will sit permanently.

The brief

The focus of this brief is the creation of eight different films by eight different film makers to creatively explore and express these mindsets in relation to fashion. The short films (60 – 90 secs each) will be screened at a showcasing event in November 2019, organised to celebrate and mark the end of a five year partnership between CSF and an industry partner.

The films will subsequently be used through online channels, to celebrate the partnership, to highlight CSF’s approach to sustainability, and to inform fashion education. The films will: be a creative interpretation of one mindset and highlight the importance of this mindset as part of a shift towards sustainability.

You’ll be working with the Creative Director of LCF’s School of Design and Technology, Rob Phillips, to originate and work through your idea of the film.
