Coronavirus: guidance for prospective students

We've put together some useful guidance for prospective students during the Coronavirus outbreak.

If you're thinking about applying, or you've applied for a pre-degree, undergraduate or postgraduate course starting in 2020/21, see our advice on:

  • term dates
  • online events
  • how to apply
  • study offers
  • English language qualifications
  • immigration and visas
  • student accommodation
  • LCF's move to a new single campus

2020/21 term dates

Because of the Coronavirus outbreak our course start dates for 2020/21 have changed. We'll be starting later in the autumn to give all of our new and returning students as much time as possible to prepare for their studies.

Courses will start from Monday 19 October 2020. All 2020/21 term dates have also changed.

If you have an offer to study with us, we'll send you an updated offer email showing the new start and end dates for your course.

Open day events

Our open days on-campus are postponed until social distancing measures end. Find out what it’s like to study at UAL - join an online open day.

Applying to UAL

If haven’t applied yet, you should apply as soon as you can. Our application process is not affected by the Coronavirus outbreak.

  • First check your course page - some courses have already closed for new applications.
  • How and when to apply depends on your course and where you’re applying from.

If you’ve started an application, you should meet all submission deadlines. If the Coronavirus outbreak means you might miss any deadlines, contact us on your UAL Portal as soon as possible.

Getting a decision on your application

We're doing everything we can to make application decisions quickly. We know it’s not easy waiting to hear news.

Because of the Coronavirus outbreak, we now review applications online and we'll let you know the outcome as soon as we can.

Responding to your offer

Please respond to your offer by the deadline. If the Coronavirus outbreak means you might miss the deadline, contact us on your UAL Portal as soon as possible.

Meeting the conditions of your offer

If you have a conditional study offer, you have until Monday 21 September 2020 to meet the conditions.

We've extended the deadline because we know the Coronavirus outbreak may be affecting what you need to meet your offer conditions.

You should do all you can to meet your conditions as soon as possible. Don't wait for the extended deadline. We recommend you try to meet your conditions by the original deadline we gave you.

When you've met your conditions, log in to your UAL Portal and upload your evidence.

UK qualifications

Because of the Coronavirus outbreak, the UK Government have cancelled all exams.

  • For A levels, AS levels and GCSEs a calculated grade will be given.
  • For vocational and technical qualifications (such as NVQs, BTECs and Foundation degrees or diplomas) we expect something similar to calculated grades to be announced soon.

Read the latest guidance on gov.uk.

International qualifications

Teaching, assessments and examinations at schools, colleges and universities across the world have been affected by the Coronavirus outbreak. We will do all we can so affected offer holders can study with us.

If you are unable to meet any of your offer conditions, you must contact us on your UAL Portal as soon as possible

English language qualifications

We have added to the list of English language qualifications that we accept as proof of English language ability. We now accept:

  • International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma
  • TOEFL iBT
  • more qualifications from secondary or high school education

Read our English language requirements and check our updated list of accepted English language qualifications.

If you now meet any of your English language conditions, you must contact us on your UAL Portal as soon as possible.

Please have your English language qualification(s) ready.

SELT providers

If you:

The number of approved SELT providers has increased. LanguageCert centres are now on the official list, and Pearson test centres will be added soon.

Test centre closures

The Coronavirus outbreak means many test centres are closed. Check test centre websites regularly for changes.

  • You still have time to meet the English language conditions on your offer.
  • Please don’t worry if you can’t get to a test centre at the moment.

If your test results will come after your offer conditions deadline, you must contact us on your UAL Portal as soon as possible.

Pre-sessional English

If you have a conditional or unconditional offer and need to improve your English, our Pre-sessional courses can help.

Places on our pre-sessional courses are limited - apply now.

UAL Progress Test

If you're:

  • a current student at UAL, and
  • have applied to continue your studies with us to the next level (for example undergraduate to postgraduate), and
  • have been asked to evidence a certain English language level to progress your studies (so have a conditional study offer);

then you may have been planning to take a UAL Progress Test.

The Coronavirus outbreak means we've had to put our progress tests on-hold. We will start tests again as soon as the UK Government allows.

In the meantime, read our English language requirements and check our updated list of accepted English language qualifications.

If you now meet any of your English language conditions, you must contact us on your UAL Portal as soon as possible.

Please have your English language qualification(s) ready.

Immigration and visas

If you’re an international student from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland, you'll need to follow immigration and visa regulations and apply for a Tier 4 (General) visa.

We also recommend reading the Coronavirus information for international students from the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA).

Making a visa application from inside the UK

Because of the Coronavirus outbreak, UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services (UKVCAS) has suspended all services.

You can still register and submit a visa application. Visit gov.uk for the latest guidance.

Making a visa application from outside the UK

Because of the Coronavirus outbreak, all visa application centres outside the UK are now closed.

  • If you’re in Europe, Africa and parts of the Middle East, visit TLS contact for visa application centre information.
  • If you’re anywhere else in the world (outside of the UK), visit VFS global for visa application centre information.

Please keep checking gov.uk for the latest guidance.

Student accommodation

Applying for student accommodation (halls of residence) is not affected by the Coronavirus outbreak. Applications are open.

The move-in date for student accommodation is Saturday 3 October 2020.

Read about our student accommodation and visit Halls Life to find out more about how to apply, and what it’s like to live in halls.

If you have any questions about student accommodation, contact us using IM chat online or email accomodation@arts.ac.uk.

LCF's move to a new campus

Because of the Coronavirus outbreak, building work at London College of Fashion's new single campus on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park as part of London's East Bank development has been paused.

We don't know yet exactly what this means for our move-in date, but it will be delayed.

Stay up-to-date with news about LCF's move.
