Hamish Muir was a founding principal of 8vo, with Mark Holt and Simon Johnston. 8vo designed a wide range of typographically-based projects in identity, print, publishing, record packaging and information design for clients in the UK, Europe and the U.S. between 1984 and 2001. Muir was also co-editor of Octavo, International Journal of Typography. It was edited, designed and published by 8vo as an eight issue series between 1986 and 1992. With Mark Holt, Muir wrote, edited and designed 8vo On the Outside (Lars Müller Publishers, Baden, 2005).

Muir is co-founder of MuirMcNeil, a collaborative venture with Paul McNeil, exploring systems approaches to design for communication. In 2010 they wrote and designedU:D/R 03, a research paper published by Unit Editions, concerning their ThreeSix parametric type design project. The publication and the typeface won two prestigious awards from The ISTD (International Society of Typographic Designers) in 2011. ThreeSix typefaces are published by Fontshop International.

In 2011, Muir co-founded and was Art-Director of Outcast Editions, a digital publishing company specialising in interactive architecture and design related titles for iPad.

Two main areas:

1. The use of parametric rules and number driven systems to generate letterforms, fonts, alphabets, typefaces and other graphic elements and the application of these in communication design.

2. The exploration of navigation interfaces in screen-based media which evolve from and respond to the context, content and audience of and for the information to be communicated.
