Centre for Sustainable Fashion (CSF) explores the field of Design for Sustainability and its application to fashion as both artistic and business practice.

Centre for Sustainable Fashion (CSF) shapes and contributes to the field of Design for Sustainability through three key intersecting areas: research, education and knowledge exchange with industry. CSF aims to provoke, challenge, and question the status quo in fashion; by engaging in transformational design which cross-references fashion’s ecological, social, economic, and cultural agendas.

CSF’s work is underpinned by its Declaration and current Strategy (2020-25).

CSF aims to:

  • create internationally acclaimed research
  • set agendas in government, business and public arenas
  • pioneer world relevant curriculum

CSF was conceived to question and challenge reactionary fashion cultures, which reflect and re-enforce patterns of excessive consumption and disconnection, to expand fashion’s ability to connect, delight and identify individual and collective values.

Since its inception in 2008, CSF has continued to produce an extensive range of new research, extending knowledge and understanding of fashion as a discipline. Its influence, locally and globally, is expanded by working with industry to impact practice, education to transform fashion’s role in society, and with wider publics to influence political change.

Under the leadership of its Founder and Director, Professor Dilys Williams, CSF has gained a reputation as the UK’s leading authority in fashion and sustainability and has worked with some of the world’s leading organisations including, UNHCR, ASOS, Condé Nast, H&M, Hush, IBM, Kering, Nike, Selfridges, Tommy Hilfiger, Li & Fung, and Marks and Spencer.

Working with and holding the tension between research, industry, and education CSF is a powerful voice for change – championing innovation and empowering the next generation to take the radical steps necessary to secure the future of one of the world’s most creative and inspiring industries.

CSF’s projects start from many an idea, proposal, brief, or challenge and are led by their expert team. With projects that explore how knowledge exchange, education, and research can work in practice, often collaborating with external organisations, brands, and institutions.
