Framing the garden through a nostalgic lens: representations of class and gender in English film during the period 1980 to 1990

The focus of my research is the role of the garden in British films. In particular, I consider the ways in which cinematic images of the garden evoke a nostalgic past and explore how the depiction of gardens on screen have served to structure representations of identity. In doing so, I focus on films made during the 1980s, which provoked accusations of heritage nostalgia. I will examine the way in which cinema organises and renders the space of the garden and the ways in which these representations articulate gendered and class identities.
