What does light frame? Investigating the material and the practices of light in contemporary arts

College: Central Saint Martins
Supervisors: Dr Caterina Albano, James Swinson, Dr Daniel Rubenstein

The research addresses an enquiry of contemporary light-based practices, focusing on Light-Art. By questioning the metaphysical interpretation of light as medium, the research investigates how to re- think light in consideration of empirical implications in contemporary visual arts as emerged both in artistic practices and post-structuralist theories from the late ‘60s. The study proposes a materiality of light informed by the poietic investigations of its qualities and it extends the examination to affective experiences of light-arts. The research intends to examine the light-matter by employing a framing methodology which considers heterogeneous practices and radical approaches of experience and meanings.
