The intricacy of the ‘ordinary’ and the complexity of the ‘everyday’; their translation into screen costume.
London College of Fashion
This project will analyse a specific city based television production, ‘The Street’ (2006-2009) written by Jimmy McGovern and set in Salford, Manchester. It will focus on its use of ordinary clothing as costume. The aims are to interrogate the construction, articulation and reception of ordinary clothing within a television production, to explore what if any influence screen representations of the ‘ordinary’ have upon existing notions of classed identities and to consider what may or may not be the underlying ideologies behind the representation of the ordinary on screen. It is hoped this project will add to the newly emerging literature around television costume (Warner, 2013) offering a rounded critique which considers and integrates both theory and practice.
