Edith Head - 'Dress Doctor': her role as disseminator of fashion advice and her involvement with and influence on American fashion from 1945 to 1981
As Hollywood’s most celebrated costume designer, Edith Head dressed many of Hollywood’s biggest stars.
However, she had a second career giving fashion advice to the women of America. She took fashion shows on the road, broadcast fashion tips on the radio, regularly appeared as an expert on television shows, wrote advice columns in magazines and generated a range of paper patterns.
This thesis-based PhD will explore this important aspect of her life, which made a major contribution to the way fashion was perceived in the United States, and has not been given the attention it deserves.
