Listening For Echoes: 'Afterwardsness' as a model for artistic practice

Camberwell, Chelsea and Wimbledon

My research proposes a means for understanding the temporal connections and psychic causality at play, in the encounter with art.

Nachträglichkeit or 'Afterwardsness', is a Freudian term that describes the psychical mechanism of deferred action: how past events, experiences or memory traces gain significance as a result of a re- experiencing of them, at a later time.

I will use the concept of Nachträglichkeit

(a) proposing it as an analogical model for art practice

(b) to generate four case studies, to be employed as a creative model for theoretical and practical engagement with works of art.
