Ambiance & Atmosphere: Understanding the Impact of Abstract Stained Glass in German Sacred Spaces
Central Saint Martins
This research aims to understand the contribution made by post-war abstract stained glass windows in German sacred spaces, their impact on the affective, emotional and spiritual experiences of the viewer and to evaluate how these align with the response(s) they were intended to elicit, when commissioned and/or designed.
I will investigate this using frameworks associated with those who are exploring affect, atmosphere and ambiance in order to understand how spaces are experienced by the people who use them and the meanings these places develop as a result (Massumi, 2002; McCormack, 2003; Thrift, 2008).
