Biography

Susan Orr is Dean of Learning, Teaching and Enhancement and Professor of Creative Practice Pedagogy at University of the Arts London.

Prior to this, Susan was Associate Dean and Acting PVC for the Faculty of Arts, Computing, Engineering and Sciences at Sheffield Hallam University.

Susan is a Visiting Professor at Bournemouth University.

Susan leads the UAL Teaching and Learning Exchange which works in partnership with the Colleges to improve the student experience by working across three areas: arts education, digital learning and careers and employability. Susan is chair of the UAL Learning and Teaching Enhancement Committee.

Susan studied at University College London (BSc, MA and Doctorate). Her doctoral thesis 'Making Marks: the Artful Practice of Assessment in Fine Art' explored fine art lecturers’ studio based assessment practices. She has written extensively on the subject of art and design pedagogy in higher education.

Susan is editor for the journal Art, Design and Communication in Higher Education, and on the editorial board of three further journals: Teaching in Higher Education, Writing in Creative Practice and Media Education Research Journal. Susan has coauthored a book for Routledge Press entitled 'Art and Design Pedagogy in Higher Education: Knowledge, Ambiguity and Values in the Creative Curriculum.

Susan is on the Steering Group for the European League of Institute of Arts Academy. In 2010, Susan was awarded a Higher Education Academy National Teaching Fellowship. This was awarded in recognition of her teaching, leadership, research and contribution to art and design HE pedagogy.

Susan was a panel member for the Teaching Excellence Framework in 2017 and this year she is chairing the TEF Arts Subject Pilot Panel.
