Securing funding to 2021 for Level 3 Diploma and Extended Diploma Art and Design

Please note: The following funding changes affect centres in England only. Centres in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are wholly unaffected.

Information regarding:
QAN: 60028270 / UAL Level 3 Diploma in Art and Design (externally moderated)
QAN: 60028269 / UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design (externally moderated)

Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) have recently announced a process to ensure that students registering on these qualifications can be fully funded to Summer 2021. Please see the full guidance here.

Funding is being removed for these qualifications from August 2020. This means that students registering on the one year Diploma will not be able to 'top-up' to the Extended Diploma in Autumn 2020.

We therefore strongly recommend that you register all Level 3 Art and Design students on the full two-year Extended Diploma at the outset QAN: 60028269 / UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design (externally moderated). This will ensure that these students are fully funded should they continue to study on this qualification to completion in 2021.

ESFA have confirmed that should any of these students wish to exit in Summer 2020 with a Diploma, rather than continue to the Extended Diploma, this will not affect centres' qualification achievement rates (QAR) or ESFA’s audit of your centre.

Please note that our alternative Level 3 Applied General Diploma and Extended Diploma in Art and Design (externally assessed) will remain fully funded. We are recommending, however, that centres remain on the pre-existing moderated qualification at this stage. This is because we are improving the assessment processes and administrative requirements of these newer qualifications, following the first complete delivery cycle and feedback from early deliverers. This will ensure that all centres migrating to the externally assessed qualification in Autumn 2020 will benefit from our process enhancements and a full support package.

If your centre has a high level of interest in delivering our externally assessed Level 3 Applied General Diploma and Extended Diploma in Art and Design please contact our approvals team so that they can this discuss with you when our approvals window opens again in October 2019.

We are also continuing to develop new qualifications that will attract full funding for first teaching in Autumn 2020 and will share more detail with centres in coming months.
