Wimbledon College of Arts
Person Type
Grace Nicholas

Grace Nicholas graduated from Wimbledon's BA Costume Design course and now works as a Costume and Production Designer.

What's studying BA Costume Design at Wimbledon like?

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the college! I lived in Tooting, in the Furzedown halls in my first year, which was one of the best years of my life. I made friends with people on all different kinds of courses, so Wimbledon really felt like a friendly community.

One of the best things about Wimbledon was almost every evening there'd be some sort of event happening, usually an exhibition and always with free alcohol!

This was a really nice way to break up the evening if I was working late.

What did you learn from the college's teaching staff?

How designs depend on the theme of the production as well as the fabric the character is wearing. I also experimented quite a lot when it came to making things and, with the tutors and technicians advice, learnt a lot of unusual techniques that work well with a wide range of materials.

Did you get much industry experience during your course?

I did a 2 month placement as part of my second year, and spent my time working as a costume and set assistant for Prangsta Costumiers on a play called And I And Silence at the Finborough Theatre.

I also worked on a film in my first year and made costumes for a burlesque company the following summer.

I did a good amount of work experience, which really helped prepare me for the industry.

And what are you working on now?

I work on a freelance basis, so what I do varies from one week to the next as I'm always juggling more than one project. Right now, I'm a costume supervisor for the theatre company Les Enfants Terribles, and we're doing a festival run of original shows that use fables as inspiration.

Any advice for future Wimbledon students?

  • Do as much industry work as possible during your studies
  • Really push your design and production ideas so you can make best use of all the college's facilities
  • Make friends with as many students as you can - it'll make studying at Wimbledon an even more fun place to be
