Biography

Juliet Sugg is an artist, illustrator, educator and an Associate Lecturer for BA (Hons) Illustration and Visual Media at London College of Communication.

Juliet studied MA Communication Design – Illustration at Central Saint Martins. She has been commissioned both commercially and personally for various projects including the Whitechapel Gallery, Southbank Centre and the Whitstable Biennale.

Her work as an authorial illustrator sees her push the boundaries of visual narrative. With a combined background in art and theatre, she endeavours to combine a curiosity for the weird and wonderful with a passion for making art that invites the viewer to look deeper than surface level.

She fuses illustrative imagery with performance and installation creating 'live' graphic novels, which allow the viewer to step inside the narrative. The work straddles the boundaries between illustration and fine art, creating strange and often confrontational imagery, which may appear sugary on first glance only to reveal disquieting undertones. Surreal scenes wrap around a confessional approach, blurring autobiography and myth.

Her approach to teaching puts an emphasis of the students as author, with a passion for developing their unique voices and a sense of ambition within the potential of contemporary illustration.
