Summer Study Abroad -  Filmmaking
London College of Communication
Open to all levels

You will learn how to produce your own short film, shot here in London. You will go from the basics of filmmaking to producing and editing on an intensive, hands-on course. It is suitable for those who want to learn either dramatic or documentary filmmaking.

This course is ideal if you want to experience one of our renowned subjects for 3 weeks in London and:

you are 18+ and a student, or you want to apply to university


you work, or aspire to work in a creative industry


you have an interest in art and design


you want to study and live in London for 3 weeks.

  • experience a taster of the undergraduate Filmmaking programme taught by tutors from London College of Communication.

Entry requirements

English requirements

You should be proficient in written and spoken English and be able to participate in group discussions and make presentations. As a guideline we would expect you to have an English language level equivalent to IELTS score of 6.0.

Academic requirements

You should have some prior study in design and drawing skills, Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator skills is essential but do not need to have studied animation before.

This course is perfect for you if you are thinking of further study or professional development in animation. If you have questions about your academic background, please contact the UAL Study Abroad team.

Course details

You will study in intensive workshops, with your own tutor and you will work in teams to make your films. You will assume a variety of roles: writer, producer, director, editor and performer In each area you will be supported and taught by experts. This is an intensive course and you will be expected to work with your team in the evenings and at the weekends.

Most of all the film will be fun. You will come together with like-minded people, sharing the adventure of filmmaking with all its challenges and thrills and you will leave us with a fully-produced short film.

Course Aims

  • Give you a specialised study experience in the creative and technical aspects of digital film production.
  • Promote collaboration and team-working to enable the production of original works of fiction and documentary film
  • Enable you to understand the role of the moving image as a force for communication

Learning Outcomes

  • An ability to research ideas that can be developed into fiction or documentary films
  • Apply skills in communication, problem solving, critical evaluation and teamwork by creating films as member of a team
  • Apply a range of specialist creative technical and key skills, producing informed and considered solutions to specific problems in film production & criticism.

Course Credits

On completion of this course you will receive a Record of Study.

If you need any additional supporting documentation to convert this into credit for your home university we can provide that for you. This summer school is based on classes from BA Filmmaking courses taught at London College of Communication.

Tutor information

Helene Whitehall is a cinematographer and director with over 25 years of experience working in the film and television industry. She has worked extensively overseas, from USA, Europe, Japan to Papua and Iceland, for clients such as the BBC, ITV and National Geographic. She has shot pop proms, drama but specialised in documentaries.

You will have access to a kit-room stocked with Canon XA10 camcorders, booms and lighting rigs. Once you have finished filming, you can edit your films in our edit suites installed with industry-standard editing software: Avid, Apple Final Cut Pro and Logic, Adobe Creative Cloud Premiere and After Effects.
