Name and job title
Peter Smithson, Technical Co-ordinator 3D Large (Fine Art)
What's your background?
I studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths, continued practicing after and have recently made site-specific work as part of the Setouchi Triennale. I've worked at Central Saint Martins for 32 years now. Initially I was the Foundation Technician, then I worked for Fine Art and Critical Studies, a new part time course, before moving to Critical Fine Art Practice, a new Fine Art pathway, further to this I became a Senior Fine Art Technician.
So I've changed roles a lot and have also worked in video through the changes from analogue to digital. I'm now in the workshops which is much more my area. People ask me why I've stayed so long but my job has changed a lot, expanded as appropriate and it's definitely never boring.
What do you love most about your job?
Currently I've got a really good team of people I work with. There's an interesting, diverse set of students all with different problems I try and help.
What's your favourite thing about Central Saint Martins?
It's the people - the staff and the students. The move to King's Cross has given the College a new, very different dimension especially from the technical side of things.
Who's your favourite artist/photographer/fashion designer/director etc?
If you put me on the spot, I guess Arte Povera, Minimalist and early-mid Renaissance. I like simplicity and the whole idea of installation.
What advice would you give to new students?
Make as much work as you can and don't be afraid to get it wrong.
