Huawei collaborated with Central Saint Martins to challenge student designers to reimagine smartphone accessories that push the boundaries of art and design, ensuring that technology and design are interwoven and inseparable elements.
The brief was set to students from across 2 masters courses at CSM - MA Design: Ceramics, Furniture, Jewellery and MA Industrial Design. Students worked in multi-disciplinary teams to create accessory design concepts that embody Huawei’s notion of the New Aesthetic, which integrates creativity, design and technology.
The winning design, ‘Spectra’, is a device that allows individuals to create music by ‘recording’ and manipulating the colours in their surrounding environment. The winner and runner-up designs were developed into models and showcased at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona to coincide with the launch of Huawei’s latest smartphone.
Huawei wanted to work with CSM and this new, young generation of designers because we want to tap into emerging creative talent. We want to work with the best and brightest young minds...to bring fresh thinking and challenge us in the way that we approach design and communication.
